I've Never Been Attacked by a Dog

Walking down Lovejoy tonight with my good friend Brett towards Vigne, wine bar extraordinare (extraordinarily expensive anyway):
There is a mongrel/mutt-ish dog attached to a bench at the streetcar stop, anomalous in the damp–where is its owner? It has that friendly, bereft dog look and I hold out a hand for it to sniff. Sniff, sniff, chaos.
It leapt up, wolflike, all teeth, and pursued me. Fortunately, it was tethered to the bench and could not keep chasing me, but it did put a significant hole in my (new) jeans. Yikes. This has never happened before. No skin punctures, no trip to the emergency room, but I was certainly taken aback. Let’s not have that happen again.
