Books: Gilgamesh, A Trip to Powell's

{ Life }

September 4, 2006

I finished the Epic of Gilgamesh, and the themes are sticking with me. For being the oldest known piece of human literature, it sure still seems relevant. I think my favorite line comes from Gilgamesh’s lamentation and protracted grief over the death of his best friend, Enkidu: “I am afraid of Death, so I roam open country.” Not sure why, but that works for me.

A trip to Powell’s brightened my spirits: six new books. Of them, I should most likely be reading Aeschylus first, but I’m starting with a popular social history called “The Year 1000: What Life was Like at the Turn of the Millennium”–because it sounds interesting.

So much to read. So very, very much to read.
