Erik Larson: Devil in the White City

{ Books & Learning }

January 8, 2007

My sister bought a copy of this book for my dad this Christmas, despite my father’s recent leanings towards not reading so much. It looked interesting enough that I picked it up for myself a couple of days later on impulse. Great read! I have often railed that the melding of interesting history and a novelistic rhetoric has long been unmade–Larson has done it, all without taking too many liberties. Even if murder and mayhem surrounding Chicago’s 1893 World’s Fair doesn’t immediately grab you, try this one.

    I went to a presentation Larson gave at NW Writers, this annual conference, mostly for newspaperpeople, that is held alternately here and in Seattle.
    It was a fascinating talk, and I liked him a lot. Folks were buying the book right and left. But I wasn’t interested in the gory details, so I passed.
