The Things I Can’t Explain

December 12th, 2007

Few things have ever seemed to me beyond the reasoning power of
science, but there are a few exceptions:

1. Seeing people who aren’t there on the sides of highways. The first
time this happened, I thought I saw someone in white walking along the
shoulder of the Sunset Highway, near the cemetery exit (hah–the
notion that it was near the cemetery had never occurred to me until
just now, when I typed it. Now it just sounds contrived). This was
many years ago. It has happened since. Today I could swear there was a
man dressed in a lime green shirt next to I-84 eastbound. But of
course there wasn’t.

2. The only two times I have been in Mortal Peril happened within two
days of each other, when I was 16. Both happened within 5 miles of
each other in the middle of nowhere.

3. When I met one of my friends Matt in Estonia. Then we met again
randomly in Latvia. And then again on a train into Berlin. And then we
lived about 15 miles from each other in England. Is it natural to run
into the same person so many times?

4. The way I feel about Mr. Pencil, and also the high desert of
central and eastern Oregon. But that’s just kind of cheesy to talk
about.

What about you guys? Inexplicable coincidences? Cosmic ironies?

A cousin of mine has the same first and middle names as I do, as well as the same birth date. But he’s adopted. That’s kind of weird.
