Booze: Things that Taste Wonderful

January 8, 2010

Here are some things that I started mixing together in the past six months or so. I found that many of them taste surprisingly good, and thought I would share. Fair warning: all involve alcohol.

Pre-Flight Cooler
1 part Dry, simple Spanish or Italian white wine. The less nuanced, the better.
1.5 parts (ish) San Pellegrino Aranciata orange soda. The moderate sweetness and the spritzy carbonation lead to something that’s not cloying.
The perfect, easy-drinking, simple-yet-sophisticated bev before boarding that cramped, stressful flight.
Cointreau Up-Do
2 parts Prosecco or clean, dry, simple white bubbly
1 part Cointreau
Dash Orange Flower Water
Dash Fresh orange or tangerine juice
Float An orange or tangerine slice
Don’t even bother with Triple Sec. Cointreau costs four times as much for a reason. Serve up, with floats of orange slices.
Special Hot Chocolate
1/4 cup Cocoa
1/3 cup Sugar
3 cups Milk, preferably with some fat in it
1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon
Dash Cayenne
Liberal Dash Salt
1-2 shots Decent tequila
Simmer everything but the tequila stovetop in a small saucepan, over low heat, whisking until everything incorporates and it’s hot. Add tequila and, well, olĂ©!
Leisure Time
1-2 shots Really good Kentucky bourbon, in a glass or snifter
1-2 ice cubes Because we weren’t born in a barn. Then again, you may prefer it neat.
One Bathtub, warm, preferably scented with bergamot and rosewood essential oils
1-2 squares Nearly bitter, high cocoa percentage dark chocolate
Nibble, soak, sip. Repeat.

I know it's gauche to comment on one's own site, but, hey, gotta test this thing.

After many evenings combining bourbon on the rocks and chocolate, I can confirm that "nibble, soak, sip" is the correct order, with at least 30 seconds rest between rounds. The reason: ice in the drink cools your mouth, to the point where chocolate nibbled immediately after doesn't melt on the tongue. It's like munching on a candle. Half a minute pause is enough to bring everything back up to temp though.
