Heard on Armin Van Buuren’s Another State of Trance episode 352. Like.
…This song is a summer charmer, in the vein of some of Tiesto’s early-2000’s “In Search of Sunrise” tracks. Reminds me of a sad but intense time in 2001. Perhaps it will cheer you.
Genre: Progressive Trance
Intensity/Danceiness: Medium
Cheesiness: Medium low
Season: Summer
Lyza-ness: High
Vocals: Nope
Progressiveness: Medium
I’m going to see DJ Armin Van Buuren at the Roseland on Sunday evening, the 11th. Wouldn’t it be nice if you were there, too? If this is your sort of thing?
A quick poll of myself shows that these three songs go through my head more than any other:
1. Mah na Mah na (The Muppets). I sing this to myself. A lot. And the whistling.
2. “All the Things She Said” by T.A.t.U. What’s worse than bubble-gum Eurotrash girlpop? Having it stuck in your head for five years. I think it’s the way its rhythm is in fives: la-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la-la. My second weakness here is that I speak enough Russian to understand the original version (”Ya Soshla S’uma”–translates to roughly “I went away from my mind” or more obviously and idiomatically “I went out of my mind”). Watch it here, if you dare. Lots of hot chick makeoutness.
3. The Oscar Mayer Weiner Song. I wish it would die.
The theme from Super Mario Brothers is my constant “pause” song. I’m in line at the store waiting for the cashier, it starts up. Waiting in traffic. Yah. There it is again. Waiting for a build. Uh-huh.
Until recently, I had some Decemberists song stuck in my head for days. Except, maddeningly, I kept hearing the lyrics “Los Angelees, I’m yours” and thinking “Los Ungulates, I’m yours.” I cannot explain this, but it made it all the more annoying.
Thanks to my typing this comment, the song is now back in my head.
T.A.t.U. was a wonderfully packaged pop moment. Even better was “Not Gonna Get Us”. That wacky Trevor Horn (Buggles, etc.).
I have been thinking about it for some time and I’ve decided I’m comfortable with declaring that my favorite electronica/dance/trance song ever (and I really, really mean this) is:
Hybrid - Unfinished Symphony
To wit, I played the Soundtrack Mix (just strings–the Russian Federal Orchestra) as the procession music at my wedding, which is a pretty strong endorsement. I think my favorite mix is Sasha and Digweed’s from the phenomenal album Northern Exposure 2 — East Coast Edition (I know that’s a mouthful); more about that album later because it kind of defined my life.
I dunno, what do you think? I hope I don’t realize I’ve made a mistake here. It’s a bold pronouncement for me.
If you like your dance songs to be songy, this is a good one for you. Lissie’s vocal is distinctive, less ethereal and flighty than most trance sounds. A slight edge, slightly dark, yearning.
I’m pretty sure the vocals actually sing “giddyup” at some point. Do you hear that, too?
Heard this on XMU this morning as I drove through a downpour to work. “Giddyup” confirmed. The XM DJ (Billy Zero) was really lovin’ this track. I thought it was just okay.

Thank god I don’t hear the Oscar Mayer song…
