Track Pick: “Friday Coffee (Paul Keeley Mix)” by Mango

May 16th, 2008

Heard on Armin Van Buuren’s Another State of Trance episode 352. Like.

…This song is a summer charmer, in the vein of some of Tiesto’s early-2000’s “In Search of Sunrise” tracks. Reminds me of a sad but intense time in 2001. Perhaps it will cheer you.

Genre: Progressive Trance
Intensity/Danceiness: Medium
Cheesiness: Medium low
Season: Summer
Lyza-ness: High
Vocals: Nope
Progressiveness: Medium

Music Pick: Morgan Page is Kind of Like God

March 28th, 2008

If you’ve been around me and heard me talk about music in the last several weeks, I probably have mentioned Morgan Page’s “Longest Road” (feat. Lissie), especially the essentially perfect remix by Deadmau5. Turns out the guy is diverse.

Today I’m feeling not so super, so the single “Fuck was I” is perfect. Sort of effete, regretful, winsome. Way downtempo with a fairly indie-sounding female vocal, it’s perfect for these rainy days when winter won’t quite let go. Sort of gives you a championing feeling. Depression vindicated.

Genre: Chilled/Atmospheric Downtempo
Cheesiness: Not exactly, but sad female vocal
Dance-iness/Intensity: Very low
Tranciness: Low
Progressiveness: Low
Lyzaness: Medium

Fuck Was I (Morgan Page remix) (MP3 sample)

Believe it or not, “Longest Road” is from the same EP. In case you haven’t heard it, you really should. Especially if you were taken by Iio in the early 2000’s. It kind of fills that hole for me.

Genre: Progressive House (with Trance undertones)
Cheesiness: A bit; not too bad
Tranciness: Medium
Progressiveness: High
Danciness/Intensity: Medium
Lyzaness: Very high

Morgan Page feat. Lissie - The Longest Road (Deadmau5 Radio Edit) (MP3 Sample)

Both of these tracks are off of the EP “Elevate”, which by all means seems to be eclectic and fairly awesome so far. Get it at BeatPort!

Track Pick: Bonus Edition

March 19th, 2008

I am following up my last post with a quick follow-on to dispel the cheesy smell that I emitted with the AVB track.

Hanson & Parker — Aim High, Shoot Low (Label: Maelstrom)

Cheesiness: Pretty Low
Progressiveness: Medium High
Intensity/Danceiness: Very Low
Tranciness: Low
Lyzaness: Medium (High if you consider male vocals)

This is an icy, ethereal tripper with progressive roots, an airy, mysterious intermittent male vocal. Quiet, but not chilled, exactly.

Music: Track Pick

March 2nd, 2008

Morgan Page — Longest Road feat. Lissie (Deadmau5 Remix)

Tranciness: Medium
Progressiveness: Medium-High
Vocal: Female/Pervasive (song-like structure)
Intensity/Danciness: Medium-Low
Cheesiness: Medium-Low
Lyza-ness: Medium-High

If you like your dance songs to be songy, this is a good one for you. Lissie’s vocal is distinctive, less ethereal and flighty than most trance sounds. A slight edge, slightly dark, yearning.

I’m pretty sure the vocals actually sing “giddyup” at some point. Do you hear that, too?

And what’s with Deadmau5? Everywhere these days.

One Response to “Music: Track Pick”

  1. El Gray Says:

Heard this on XMU this morning as I drove through a downpour to work. “Giddyup” confirmed. The XM DJ (Billy Zero) was really lovin’ this track. I thought it was just okay.

New tunes I’ll share with you, that I am quite enjoying. Sorry about the grammar there.

  • “Pretty Girls Make Mothers” by The Remote (Ambient Mix): Chilled/Sad. Get it on Beatport.com.
  • “Delorean” by Flux Capacitor (Noel Sanger Remix): Straightforward cheerful trance. Get it on Beatport.com
  •  ”Downtime” by Air Hustlers (Kenneth Thomas Remix): Great stuff–my type of tune. Energizing (but not overstated) progressive female vocal trance with that circa 2003 sound I like so much from Mr. Thomas. Underrated DJ in my opinion. Get it on Beatport.com. Lyza’s pick of these tracks. Quite emphatically like this one.
  • “Endless Existence” by Mike Mikhjian (Soliquid Walking on Clouds Remix): Mike Mikhjian is from Detroit (which belies the genre of this track) and is only 18. This track is somewhat similar to the “Delorean” one but slightly more energetic. Slightly. Get it on AudioJelly.com. It’s not technically released yet.
  • “Jupiter Calling” by Thomas Schwartz (Original Mix): Nice, straight-ahead, smile-inducing progressive house that’s getting a lot of airplay.
  • “System Addict” by Plump DJs: Something totally different, a big/breaks track in the tradition of the Chemical Brothers and certain older tracks by U.N.K.L.E. Great stuff for people not into the ditziness of trance. This one’s got pretty wide distribution; you can find it on iTunes, for example.
